1.) Associate Professor in Pre-Modern Global History

At the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion (AHKR) there is a vacant permanent position as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) in pre-modern global history before c. 1750.
The discipline of history deals with human society through the ages. The historians at the department carry out research and teaching at all levels, from BA to MA and PhD. The department emphasizes breadth in both research and teaching, and offers courses in all historical periods, from antiquity until the present, on a variety of levels, from the local to the global, and in a variety of fields, such as economic, social, cultural and political history. In addition to the vacant position there are 23 permanent academic positions in History.
The department has a long tradition of research in many forms of non-European and international history, both in the areas of economic and intellectual history. This includes studies in trans-continental trade relations, the history of the Middle East and Muslim Africa, of the eastern Mediterranean in Antiquity, and of the modern USA and China.
The department wishes to strengthen this with a new position in pre-modern global history, understood as the period from the first civilizations until c. 1750.
The position has both a teaching and a research component. The successful applicant must be able to teach and supervise at all levels within the department’s existing course programme in pre-modern history, and to develop new courses in pre-modern global history.
Qualification requirements
The applicants must have a research competence in history on the level of a Norwegian PhD, in the field of pre-modern global history. The competence may be within different definitions of “global history”, but should be based on empirical research from at least one non-European region, with an emphasis on trans-cultural and/or comparative analyses that span more than one cultural area. Preference will be given to applicants whose research can interact with an established research tradition at the department. Relevant teaching and administrative experience will also be emphasised.
Basic training in teaching is a requirement. The successful applicant will be offered appropriate courses if this requirement is not met on appointment.
Norwegian is the language of instruction and administration. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment. The university provides suitable courses for learning Norwegian.
Nominated candidates will be invited to an interview and asked to give a lecture.
The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen, and work and participate in the running of the department on a daily basis. The successful applicant has to conform to the regulations that apply to the position.
Salary
Salary will be paid in accordance with pay level 60 (code 1011/frame 24) on the government salary scale (currently NOK 509.100 gross p.a.), following ordinary meriting regulations (wage range 60 – 65) From the gross wage a 2 % law-enforced membership in the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) is deducted.
Higher initial placement may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.

In addition to the vacant position there are 23 permanent academic positions in History.
The history of science has been a prioritised research area at the department since 2009. It is well rooted in an active research milieu working particularly in the fields of medicine and natural sciences, as well as in the history of historical research itself. The department wishes to continue and renew the history of science as a research area, for instance through research on institutionalized science.
The position has both a teaching and a research component. The successful applicante must be able to teach and supervise at all levels within the department’s existing course programme in modern history, and will have a specific responsibility for teaching history of science and historical theory and method.
